Communicating across cultures always demands heightened sensitivity and an ability to compromise. Communicating across cultures in high-risk, high-stress teams makes even more demands. Successful interaction and subsequent achievement in such settings requires an understanding of cross-culture communication and knowledge of how to improve it.

In this program, we will examine the impact of culture on communication; we'll consider culture not only as a creation of language and ethnicity (national groups) but as a creation of shared values and knowledge (functional groups).

This program will present ways of looking for connections and common understandings in order to build upon them instead of being stymied by differences. We will use the experiences of participants and instructors to provide specific examples of cultural interplay at work. Accordingly, we will explore specific cultures based on the needs of the participants.

What to Expect

This one-day training program focuses on communication strategy, initiating and sustaining practices that improve communication within your cross-cultural team. At the end of the program you will be able to:

  • Use a social needs questionnaire to understand how such needs help drive team member behavior
  • Develop ways of improving your interaction with individual team members by understanding their social needs
  • Prepare more effectively for team meetings: face-to-face, teleconferencing, and videoconferencing
  • Increase your awareness of and ability to use specific techniques to connect with your team members and connect them with each other
  • Diagnose and solve cross-cultural issues by using real experiences of program participants
